Spent brewer’s grain is a byproduct of the brewing industry; the dregs of what is left behind after the grains have been fermented and then drained. What’s good about the brewing process is the final product: liquid delight in your pint glass. What’s not so great is that these leftover remnants, the piles of spent grain from brewing, end up as food waste that often lands in your local landfill.
Industrious folks are working on finding alternative uses to keep the spent grains out of the landfill including livestock feed, fertilizer, and recycled paper. My son Jacob lives in a state rich with micro-breweries that are invested in tackling the food waste issue. He has established relationships with several breweries that are happy to share their spent grain. Jacob has purchased a commercial dehydrator to dry the spent grains and sends them to me for grinding into flour.
